AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL REVIEW ON CESTODES OF MAN IN KOREA

Abstract
The epidemiological surveys concerning parasites in Korea have been sporadically reported by many workers during the past 50 years. Though this discription on cestodes in man in our country may not represent the nationwide incidence due to the its endemicity and the difference of methodology, the following is a brief outline of epidemiological aspects of the tapeworms which have been reported up to date in Korea.
Soh et al. (1961) examined 3, 615 rural inhabitants by means of questionnaire and found 129(3. 6%) of them complained of passing segments. Although adult worms of Taenia solium were generally reported as lower in incidence than those of T. saginata, Cysticercosis cellulosae have of ten been reported from various clinics. From 1960 through 1965, 39 cases with epileptic seizure caused by the larvae of T. solium were experienced at Cholla-Puk-Do, Korea (Lee et al., 1967). In the present status, the eating habits of the residents are responsible for the relatively common incidence of taeniasis. 3. 7-4. 8% of them consume pork and beaf in raw or improperly cooked condition (Kang et al., 1963).
Since Hara and Himeno (1924), about 20 cases of the fish tapeworm have been reported in Korea. The southeastern coastal area of Korea is the densest area for the 2nd intermediate hosts of these parasites. On the other hand, since Weinstein et al. (1954) experienced 3 cases of sparganosis in Koje-Do and confirmed that those ceses had once consumed raw snakes, various human sparganosis have been reported from several areas.
As surveyed by many workers, the frog and snake are very important hosts of the larvae of the sparganum.
Soh et al. (1961) found 32 cases of Hymenoleps nana out of 14, 682 samples and confirmed that 88% of them were below 10 years of age.
As regards H. diminuta, Chyu (1958) reported only one case. Except the parasites mentioned in this review, some other tapeworms which may be found in Korea have been additionally discussed.
